New Baggage Handling System in the North and South Baggage Halls

Project Overview | Athens International Airport (ATH)

Athens International Airport (ATH) is a Design and Build Brownfield Project constructed in an operationally challenging and demanding environment. This project’s primary objective was to replace the existing baggage infrastructure to accommodate Standard 3 screening technology in the existing North and South Baggage Halls.

The new Daifuku baggage handling equipment includes some of the most advanced technologies, including new Hold Baggage Screening (HBS), Level 3 conveyor lines, energy-efficient Tilt Tray Sortation (TTS) technology, Out-of-Gauge (OOG) oversize equipment, 132 Check-in desks, and six collector conveyors. Both Baggage Halls have been upgraded with new SCADA control systems. The new baggage systems were constructed in phases spanning over three years, improving the airport’s capacity.

“Over 30 years of experience delivering long-lasting, reliable, advanced Tilt Tray Sorters to the airport industry.”

Two new TTS were installed, a product evolution that provides the highest level of redundancy and availability, with lower maintenance requirements compared to past and similar products. Sustainability is a key feature of the product; Its low profile, lightweight construction coupled with dynamic variable speed operation reduces component wear and energy costs. Its world-leading, inbuilt control system and graphical user interface are designed with the future in mind, displaying its vast array of condition-based monitoring data points, trends, logs, and standard alarms & status.

Additionally, Daifuku has been awarded a service provision contract starting September 2023, providing ongoing support to ATH through preventative and predictive maintenance activities. The focus is ensuring the system performs with operational effectiveness and reliability throughout its lifecycle. The Daifuku Operations and Maintenance team consists of multi-skilled technicians and is supported by its management and European on-call support specialists who are available 24/7 all year.

The Hidden Opportunity in IATA 753 Compliance: Why Next-Gen Changes Everything

IATA Resolution 753 ensures end-to-end baggage tracking, but its real value extends beyond compliance. Rather than retrofitting point solutions that add complexity, forward-thinking airports are using the mandate to drive operational transformation. Next-generation SCADA platforms like Sym3 integrate baggage, security, and airport operations into a single intelligence layer, enabling predictive decision-making, continuous compliance, and more efficient, resilient performance—turning a regulatory requirement into a strategic advantage.

Why Airlines Should Rethink Passenger Technology

Why Airlines Should Rethink Passenger Technology

Across aviation, digital transformation has accelerated, yet many airlines still face long queues, inconsistent passenger experiences, and operational inefficiencies because the passenger journey is ultimately shaped at check-in and bag drop—not the boarding gate. While the technology to improve these moments already exists, success depends on applying the right self-service solutions with clear intent. When effectively integrated, capabilities such as CUSS, self check-in, and self bag drop reduce queues, minimise errors, and generate real-time insight for better operational decisions, creating not just more technology, but a connected, data-driven foundation for a more efficient, resilient passenger journey.
