Case Study

Denver International Airport East and West Security Checkpoints

Challenge

Denver International Airport (DEN) saw the need to reinvigorate their Great Hall, including the Jeppesen Terminal. They developed the Vision 100 plan, focused on preparing the airport to serve the growing number of passengers which were projected to reach 100 million annually. The Great Hall program, with a total investment of $1.3 billion, included three phases, with the last two focused on the creation of new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints on the East and West sides. It would be an upgrade to the outdated airport security screening systems, using 2D X-ray machines. The new checkpoints were planned to provide passengers a more secure and efficient travel experience as they pass through DEN. Daifuku was awarded the contracts to help meet this challenge.

Solution

Daifuku provided 34 full-size Checkpoint Property Screening Systems (CPSS) lanes in collaboration with Denver International Airport – City & County of Denver Dept. of Aviation, Hensel Phelps, and the TSA.

Each lane consists of:

  • Smiths Detection’s HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX checkpoint CT X-ray scanners
  • Three curved divestment stations
  • Auto diverter
  • Threat containment unit
  • Automated tray return and collection system
  • Integrated alternate viewing station area
  • Oversize baggage handling capability on all lanes

This upgraded system enhances threat detection and allows passengers to leave items such as electronics and liquids in carry-on bags while improving the passenger’s throughput and experience.

34 full-size CPSS lanes
  • 17 Lanes at West Checkpoint
    opened February 2024
  • 17 Lanes at East Checkpoint
    opened August 2025

“All of our passengers will now get to benefit from the new state-of-art checkpoints, improving their travel experience through DEN.”

Phil Washington — Denver International Airport CEO

Outcome

DEN is one of the busiest airports in the world. In 2025, over 82.4 million passengers traveled through the airport.

To meet the ever-increasing demands, these new CPSS lanes achieve a throughput of over 250 trays per hour, providing significant time savings at the checkpoint.

As Daifuku’s first deployment after being approved for the TSA’s Qualified Products List, several records were achieved with the installation of these screening lanes, including:

  • Largest CPSS checkpoint deployment
  • First CPSS deployment with remote and cross-lane screening capabilities
  • First CPSS full-size deployment with odd-size/oversize processing
